FEAR OF FAILURE
COLLAGE ON BIRCH WOOD: post-its, business cards, class notes, postcards, receipts, prescriptions, recipes, maps
2’ x 4’

In 2012, tragically, my mother passed away suddenly from a stroke. Archived forever as a historical record is my mother’s ephemera of hand written notes on child rearing, recipes, receipts, maps, holiday menus, nail polish colors, prescriptions, personal scribblings to or about others, etc. Such items reflect the moods and mores of her past in a way that more formal records cannot. There’s a real connection between what was saved, who she was and who I am. Her vintage ephemera is a valuable primary source of information which offers a unique window into her past, a certain retelling of her story. My mother’s handwriting is SO ALIVE for me. I always studied her list making and the reliable strokes of her cursive, so consistent. Forever, this collection is a way of “getting in touch” with her and feeling her presence.
